IS IT OK TO LIE ABOUT SANTA CLAUS?
This is something I have wondered for quite some time. However, one must consider the incredible dogma that surrounds the man known as Saint Nick.
It is not easy to make criticisms, or cast doubt on the practice of lying to little children year after year. If you are reading this right now you probably feel a cold lump somewhere inside you.
How dare I insult the practice of telling kids their gifts are from Santa Claus?
If you are normal, you have been conditioned to believe that the Santa Claus myth is something worth perpetuating.
Much like if someone told you that 1 evil would achieve 10 goods.
But, ask yourself.
How did you feel the last time someone lied to you? Even about something trivial? Even if it was something they felt was for your own good?
Was it a good feeling?
Doubtful.
Why would you lie to a child? Why would someone lie to a young person they are looking to build a long term foundation with? The child's most important and formulative years are their early ones.
Why would a parent plant the seed of distrust so early? The consequences are potentially disastrous in each and every situation where this happens. The day will come when you must tell the child this is not true.
Some children will take it better than others.
However, for myself, it's not just a matter of truth vs lies. I also ask myself what is the moral lesson? Is the moral lesson that if you be good that a man from the sky will swoop down your chimney and bestow gifts upon you?
Or should the message be that Christmas is a time of giving, of family, of being thoughtful, and (for the religious) the birthday celebration of the lord Jesus Christ?
It seems to me the answer is easy.
I see no value in filling a child's head full of old myths that serve no moral purpose.
Let the dinosaurs die.
Please use a little bit of reason this Christmas and teach your children the meaning of charity, family, and love. They will hear enough lies in their life as they age and get older.
There is no reason to throw another iron on the fire.
